Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy uses injections of a concentration of a patient’s own platelets to increase the pace of the healing of injured tendons, ligaments, muscles and joints and reduce the healing period. In this way, PRP injections improves individual patient’s own healing system to improve musculoskeletal problems.
Patients blood is extracted from the arm using a reverse injection. After which the blood is processed in a centrifuge ( equipment that separates blood components into different parts according to their density ). The platelets are separated into a plasma ( blood serum ), while some of the white and red blood cells might be removed. Therefore, by spinning the blood, the equipment concentrates the platelets and this produces is what called as platelet-rich plasma (PRP).
However, depending on the protocol and technique used to prepare PRP, there are multiple different products that can be derived from putting blood into the centrifuge. Thus, different PRP preparations have different quantity of platelets, white and red blood cells. An example to portray: A product called platelet-poor plasma (PPP) can be resulted when most of the platelets are removed from the serum. The serum that is left contains cytokines, proteins and growth factors. Cytokines are emitted by immune system cells.
